This was our final assignment in Basic Design in the Spring of 1985. This design remains in use today. I've learned the need to be extra careful about the implied images in a design from this one. The portion of the design intended to convey the impresion of an ink pen nub got distorted when reinterpreted for subsequent media (such as class rings), and began to look more and more like a pair of needlenoze pliers. But the other images still convey their intended objects clearly: a pencil, a brush, and a squish of paint...oh, and the letters "V" and "A," of course.
